AMMT’S LONG RUN OBJECTIVE

AMMT aspires to be an integral part of urgently needed reforms in the education of young children in the country, particularly of children from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds. A majority of these children, like their parents, continue to bear the crushing load of the accident of birth, as victims of bad pedagogy and unsupportive home environments. AMMT believes that access to quality education from a young age is the basic constituent of building a strong foundation for a nation. AMMT’s long run objective is to contribute to the overhauling of pedagogy for these children to ensure joyful and productive life for all.

About AMMT

Arpan Mukhopadhyay Memorial Trust (AMMT), registered in 2009, is a non-profit Charitable Trust which works with primary school children from socio-economically disadvantaged households. It was started in the memory of Arpan Mukhopadhyay, better known as ‘Ali’, who passed away at the tender age of twenty leaving a large number of paintings behind him. Arpan happened to be dyslexic.

AMMT is registered under sections 12A and 80G of the Indian IT Act and the Foreign Currency Regulation Act (FCRA) of the Government of India.

AMMT’s work program is based on research findings from around the world which suggest that in the absence of informed and sensitive management, even mild cases of LD’s can degenerate into full blown affliction. Worse still, bad pedagogy, insensitive management and poor socio-economic environments — all of which is prevalent in ample measure in our educational scenario for the poor —- generate LD-like symptoms in ‘normal’ children. The majority of primary school children in these schools are designated as ‘na –layeks’ and treated as such.

About AMMT

At AMMT’s remedial school ANANDA at Kalyanpuri in East Delhi, we have developed a model that works beautifully with primary school children from the neighborhood. Our aim is to help every child to develop a genuine love for the written word, including those who show symptoms of ‘learning disabilities. We shun rote learning. Teaching is activity based. We use low-cost or no-cost material. Stories, games, plays, arts and crafts, music and dance are integral parts of our pedagogy. Development in every child is carefully monitored. We work with special educators and clinical psychologists. Our teachers, the backbone of the school, have been recruited from the community and trained in-house in the ANANDA pedagogy.

Our USP at ANANDA is unconditional love for every child. Our hope is that at some point in the not-too-distant a future, our methods will contribute to the process of reforming of our educational system.
